It is a challenging time in Norwegian working life, and many experience being laid off for shorter and longer periods. When you are laid off, it is important to contact NAV.

We also recommend that you keep in touch with your union (the local branch).

There is a lot to sort out when you are laid off. Here are tips for you who are laid off from work.

1. Contact NAV

To receive unemployment benefits during layoff, you must apply to NAV. You must contact NAV as soon as you receive a layoff notice from your employer. Remember to inform NAV that you are a member of a trade union.

2. Inform your department

Notify your department in Fellesforbundet that you are laid off. There is currently a high volume. Please use e-mail when contacting the department.

If you are in doubt that the layoff has been carried out correctly, contact your union representative.

During layoff you pay the minimum contribution. The minimum contribution for 2024 is NOK 130,– per month. You will receive an invoice.

3. Check the information we have about you

4. Financial problems?

5. Important information

  • You can be recalled to work on short notice when you are laid off.

  • You may take other work while you are laid off, but your entitlement to unemployment benefits ends as long as you have that other job.

  • During layoff, pursuant to the Working Environment Act, section 15.3, you may terminate your position with a notice period of 14 days counted from the day the termination is received by the employer. In addition, pursuant to the LO-NHO Main Agreement, chapter 7.6, for layoff beyond three months you may terminate your position without any notice period.
